17. Goodbye

IT WAS BOTH a relief and a bad surprise not to find Tom outside my room the next morning. A relief because, as much as I liked the chap, I’d had enough of having a guard breathe down my neck. It was also a bad surprise because it served as a reminder that Roy was going to leave soon.

As I fastened the last buttons of my shirt, Peggy and I walked along the oppressive corridor, heading for Commander Allen’s room. A door opened, and Bruce came out, dashing in his black uniform. He gave me a polite wave as he hurried past me, and I didn’t have time to ask him how his date with Miss Hammond had been. Speaking of which, she brushed past me, and I caught a glimpse of her face. One eye was swollen shut, red and puffy. What the heck happened to her? I couldn’t believe Bruce had done anything to hurt her. But I didn’t have time to ask any questions. It seemed I didn’t have any time these days.

Sweat trickled down my back when I knocked on Allen’s door. Peggy gave me an encouraging nod.

“Come in.” Allen’s deep voice came from the other side.

I pushed the door open, and my heart gave a lurch when I spotted Kenneth. He and the commander were sitting at a small desk where a map was spread out. Empty tumblers held it down, and red marks covered it. Despite the fact that Commander Allen was a high-ranking officer, he slept in one of the narrow, closet-like bedrooms where the cadets were sleeping. If anything, with the documents and stacks of papers around, the room was more claustrophobic than mine.

“Sir.” I swallowed past the lump in my throat. “May I talk to you in private?”

Annoyance brought Allen’s brows closer. “No. If you have something to say, speak now. I don’t have time for private meetings.”

Kenneth crossed his legs at the ankles, relaxing on the chair as if he were about to enjoy a show. Bugger him.

Peggy stood right behind me since the room was too narrow for more than three people. I cleared my throat. “I know the minister forbade me to see Roy, but since he’s leaving for Calais—”

“How do you know that?” Kenneth asked through gritted teeth.

I ignored him. “May I go to the dock to bid him goodbye?” My voice cracked. I tried to remain strong, but I didn’t care if Kenneth was witnessing my moment of weakness.

A scoff rose from Kenneth. “Stupid sentimentalisms won’t help us win the war.” He waved a dismissive hand. “I’m sure you have some duties you’re neglecting to be here and petition for your silly cause. Go and—”

“That’s enough.” Allen straightened, pressing a fist against the table, his hard gaze narrowing on Kenneth. “Kristin asked me. I’m still your commander, Lieutenant.”

“Of course, sir.” He glowered, his beast coming forth a little, if the darkening of his eyes was any indication.

Silence stretched in the room as Allen and Kenneth stared at each other.
